Christian City Names Welcome Center to Honor Dr. and Mrs. Harper
Recently, Christian City honored two well known Fayette County figures by naming the Christian City Welcome Center, "The Dr. Byron and Rose Marie Harper Welcome Center". Family and friends gathered for a dedication, reception and unveiling of a fountain commemorating their "vision of Christian City, their commitment to sustain it, and their faithfulness to serving". Dr. Harper passed several years ago, but his wife Rose Marie currently resides in Fayette County and is still an active member of the Christian City Board of Trustees. It was nearly 50 years ago that Dr. Byron Harper, his wife Rose Marie, and several others sat down to begin the first planning stages of what would become Christian City. Recognizing a need for a place for kids who did not have a safe place to live, the Harpers donated the first 50 acres of land to open Christian City, a home for abandoned and abused children. The first cottage was opened on Valentine's Day, 1965. That initial gift of love has now evolved into a bustling 500 acre campus with over 1,000 residents. Located in Union City, Christian City is a conglomeration of nine not-for-profit organizations serving homeless children, active seniors living in patio homes, and a full continuum of care for aging seniors, including assisted living, nursing and rehabilitation, and in home care. Christian City is recognized throughout the community as a great place to live and work.

Support Child Abuse Awareness Month: Sponsor a Child at The Children's Village
To honor Child Abuse Awareness Month, The Children's Village at Christian City is asking the community to consider Sponsoring a Child. As a sponsor, you may choose whether to sponsor a boy or a girl and you will receive a profile with their photo and biographical information as well as updates from The Children's Village. For $30 a month, or $360 annually, The Child Sponsorship Program is a vital part of providing love and care children so desperately need.

With over 695,000 unique confirmed reports of child abuse and neglect each year, it is becoming a serious problem in the United States. It has been proven that children who suffer abuse or neglect are 53% more likely to become juvenile delinquents, 38% more likely to be arrested as adults, and 38% more likely to become violent criminals. Furthermore, about 30% of abused and neglected children will abuse their own children later in life.

The Children's Village at Christian City provides the love and care these abused and neglected children need to stop the vicious cycles of abuse. Through the Child Sponsorship program, Christian City's Children's Village provides a loving environment free from the threat of abuse in the night or abandonment in the morning. They are a safe haven for these kids and provide them with food, clothing, a solid education, medical and dental care, emotional support, and the daily guidance of loving Christian house parents. The program's family environment allows children from every background to have access to a traditional family unit and support systems to help mend their wounded spirits. The dedicated house parents are an important component of why The Children's Village is successful at turning broken-spirited, angry, or sad children into productive, stable, and good-hearted kids. The programs helps break the negative cycles children have experienced in their very short lifetimes and help them learn the life skills they need for success.

Since 1965, The Children's Village at Christian City has been committed to caring for boys and girls in need. You can be committed to their mission too by becoming a child sponsor. This is an easy way to support The Children's Village and is very simply done with a check, debit, or credit card. For more information about The Children's Village or how to become a child sponsor, please visit www.christiancity.org or call Heidi Becker, Christian City Director of Marketing & Development at 770-703-2636.

The Children's Village Involved In National Safe Place Week
March 18th – 24th marks the annual National Safe Place Week, which serves as an awareness week for the Safe Place program. Safe Place brings businesses and volunteers together to provide help and safety to children and teens facing abuse, neglect, bullying or other crisis situations. The overall goal is to recognize the participating businesses, community organizations, youth service agencies and volunteers that are part of the National Safe Place program and work for the safety and well-being of youth in crisis. The Children's Village at Christian City, a Safe Place agency, will be participating in the National Safe Place Week by visiting other Safe Place locations in the area.

Safe Place consists of a network of more than 17,000 partnering businesses and community buildings—such as fast-food restaurants, convenience stores, fire stations, public buses, and libraries—that display Safe Place signs in their windows. When an endangered youth enters the designated Safe Place location and asks for help, trained staff members connect them to an appropriate local shelter, like The Children's Village, for proper assistance. Christian City staff will work with the teen and their families with a goal of safe reunification when possible. If it is not in the best interest of the child to return home immediately, The Children's Village will provide shelter for up to two weeks while a permanent solution is found.

The Safe Place program, which has helped more than 250,000 youth since its inception in 1983, serves nearly 1,500 communities across the country. It is managed by 140 youth-serving agencies in 39 states and the District of Columbia.

The Children's Village at Christian City is proud to be a certified Safe Place agency and shelter. This program is a great addition to the overall ministry of The Children's Village, where they have been caring for abandoned, abused, and neglected children in a residential family setting since 1965. Over 1,000 children have called The Children's Village "home." For more information about The Children's Village or Project Safe Place, please call 770-964-3309.

Gift Idea: Sponsor A Child At Christian City
What do you get the family member or friend who has everything? This Christmas you can give a gift that will touch their heart, and help boys and girls in need by sponsoring a child in their honor. The child sponsorship program at The Children's Village at Christian City is a vital part of providing residential care to kids without a safe place to live. Children who come with little but the clothes on their backs, live in cottages with full time house parents on the Christian City campus. Choose whether to sponsor a boy or a girl and you will receive a profile with their photo and their biographical information as well as regular updates from The Children's Village.

It is shocking to know that every 10 seconds a child is abused in the United States. The children placed at The Children's Village come from tragic situations of neglect, abandonment, death of a parent, or physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Through the Child Sponsorship program, Christian City's Children's Village provides a loving environment free from the threat of abuse in the night, or abandonment in the morning. It is a safe haven that provides food, clothing, a solid education, medical and dental care, emotional support, and the daily guidance of loving Christian house parents. The dedicated house parents are an important component of why The Children's Village is successful at turning broken-spirited, angry, or sad children into productive, stable, good-hearted kids.

Since 1965, The Children's Village at Christian City has been committed to caring for boys and girls in need. You can be committed to their mission too by becoming a monthly sponsor for less than a $1 a day, or $360 annually. This is an easy way to support The Children's Village and is very simply done with a check, debit, or credit card. For more information about The Children's Village or how to become a child sponsor, please visit www.christiancity.org or call Heidi Becker, Christian City Director of Marketing & Development at 770-703-2636

5th Annual Children’s Chair-ity Event Helps Provide Children A Home For The Holidays
On Valentine’s Day, 1965, there were eight young, abandoned, abused, and neglected boys who were from all different walks of life were taken ‘home’.

We can only imagine what these eight young boys had experienced up to the point of being put in a car and driven to an unknown place referred to as ‘home’. They had not experienced a loving or safe home. The very people who were supposed to love and protect them most, did not or could not. Imagine the fear and uncertainty being masked with a show of indifference or bravado or just plain anger. The boys had survived by appearing tough and being defensive. Perhaps some were simply defeated and had given up. But, this new ‘home’ represented a hope; one last hope.

Imagine how they must have felt when the car pulled up in front of the first cottage and they were met by their smiling and concerned house parents. Hope? Just maybe..What if…?

It has been forty-six years since that first child was taken ‘home’ to that first cottage, and there are now four cottages with full time house parents who provide a nurturing family environment complete with sit down dinners, household responsibilities, and traditions that create a sense of belonging. Imagine the relief from fear of abuse, of not having to worry about finding food or a safe place to sleep. But instead, they now have a warm bed, clean clothes, a good education and all the essential elements needed to help them grow up to become successful adults.

Christian City cares for the children who are sent to them both by private placement and from the Department of Family and Children Services. With a focus on family, education and healing, they are well known and respected throughout the State of Georgia as providing a program of excellence. They minister to those who are dealing with life crisis, such as death of a parent, divorce, or sexual, physical, and emotional abuse issues. Christian City’s family environment allows children from every background to have access to a traditional family unit and support systems to help mend their wounded spirits. For many, Christian City will be the only home some children will ever know.

Christian City, sits on a 500 acre campus that, for the past 46 years, has been ‘home’ to over 1,000 abandoned, abused, and neglected children. The Children’s Village at Christian City is a nonprofit, nondenominational organization that provides these special children a safe haven in a loving, family-centered, residential setting. The funding to provide this care is raised through individuals, civic groups, the faith community, local businesses and corporations like those who sponsor the Annual Children’s "Chair-ity" Event.

This is the fifth year for the volunteer driven Chair-ity Event. Along with delicious food, there will be opportunities to bid in a silent auction on an array of donated items from local businesses in the area; and of course, the beautifully hand-painted chairs donated by local artists. Also, children from The Children’s Village paint miniature chairs, which are given to the guests who sponsor a child for the month of December.

One of many exciting items to bid on is a special acoustic guitar signed by almost a dozen country artists which include Trace Adkins, Sara Evan, Julianne Hough and Diamond Rio to name a few. Of course, there are other great items such as a weekend get-a-way in the North Georgia Mountains, to Chateau Elan, or to Hilton Head Island.

For more information on The Children’s Village or the Children’s Chair-ity Event, please visit www.christiancity.org or call 770-703-2636. Tickets are $10 and proceeds help to give these children a Christmas to remember.

The Children's Village: A Project Safe Place Agency
The Children's Village at Christian City welcomed representatives from the Union City Mayor's Office and Fire Department, Chris's Kids, and the Salvation Army to the official kick-off for Project Safe Place on Friday, September 9th. The Safe Place program is a nationally acclaimed outreach program that brings businesses and volunteers together to provide help and safety to youth facing abuse, neglect, or serious family problems.

According to the National Safe Place 2009 Annual Report, 2.8 million teens run away from home each year, and more than 50 percent have reported that their parents told them to leave or knew they were leaving but did not care.

Safe Place consists of a network of more than 17,000 partnering businesses and community buildings—such as fast-food restaurants, convenience stores, fire stations, public buses, and libraries—that display Safe Place signs in their windows. As endangered youth enter the designated Safe Place locations and ask for help, trained staff members connect the endangered youth to an appropriate local shelter for proper assistance.

The Safe Place program, which has helped more than 250,000 youth since its inception in 1983, serves nearly 1,500 communities across the country. It is managed by 140 youth-serving agencies in 39 states and the District of Columbia.

The Children's' Village at Christian City is proud to be a certified Safe Place agency and shelter. This program is a great addition to the overall ministry of The Children's Village, where they have been caring for abandoned, abused, and neglected children in a residential family setting since 1965. Over 1,000 children have called The Children's Village "home." For more information about The Children's Village or Project Safe Place, please call 770-964-3309 or visit www.christiancity.org.

After attending Christian City's Hopes and Dreams Luncheon featuring Former First Lady Laura Bush, Mrs. Deal became interested in the ministries for abandoned and abused children and seniors Christian City offers. As an advocate for volunteerism and serving the community, Mrs. Deal was impressed by all the opportunities Christian City offers, both for those in need and for those who want to help others.

During her visit, she toured the cottages at The Children's Village to get a better understanding of the day to day care the house parents provide. Mrs. Deal also toured the senior housing areas, the assisted living facilities, and nursing and rehabilitation areas to gain a good understanding of the entire scope of the Christian City ministries. While stopping at Graceland Thrift Store she shopped and complimented Christian City's efforts to serve the community by offering affordable clothing and household items while funding the children's education with the proceeds. Christian City Offers a Bit of the Good Life for Seniors
Christian City is a wonderful option for active seniors looking to find an affordable place to call home. The sense of community and a full range of amenities are key factors when people make their decision to move to the Christian City campus. Many affordable independent living options are available. Whether you are interested in a beautiful patio home with a small yard for planting flowers and entertaining, or a low maintenance apartment, Christian City can meet your housing and lifestyle needs.

The community approach to independent living allows residents to really relax and enjoy their retirement. Seniors can enjoy all the benefits of living in a residential setting without the worries or responsibilities of traditional home ownership. The Senior Life Patio Home program is designed to permit individuals or couples to lease a patio home for the duration of their lifetime as long as they can care for themselves independently. For a one-time lease payment and a monthly maintenance fee, residents have the assurance of a lifetime lease and never again worry about mowing the yard, repairing the plumbing, or dealing with a leaky roof. You need to be at least 60 years old and must have financial resources for the basic cost of the unit and to pay the monthly maintenance fee. The basic cost of a unit varies depending on size, location and special features. Prices begin in the low $30,000 range.

One of the best things about living at Christian City are the amenities. An olympic size swimming pool where you can swim laps or take water aerobic classes, a fully equipped strengthening center, an on site pharmacy along with medical and dental clinics keep seniors in good mental and physical health. An ice cream and sundry shoppe, a beauty shop, a beautiful library, Graceland Thrift Store and over 220 volunteer positions keep seniors busy and having fun. A variety of planned activities, field trips, arts and music programs, bible studies and chapel services make it easy to make friends and to worship, A city within a city, you may never want to leave the campus. It is even easy to vote as Christian City is a designated polling place for all national, state, and city elections. But, if you do need to get out, getting around is easy as transportation to shopping and other destinations is provided.

As a nonprofit organization which came from humble beginnings, Christian City originally started out as a home for abandoned and abused children. On Valentine’s Day, 1965, they opened the first cottage on 50 acres donated by Dr. Byron and Mrs. Rose Marie Harper to eight little boys needing a safe place to call home. Over 1,000 children have lived in the cottages at The Children’s Village since then. The ministry for less fortunate children continues to be a service to the community and is another reason why seniors enjoy the Christian City life so much. Seniors get a chance to interact and support the children, in exchange, the children are often found baking cookies or delivering small gifts or cards to the seniors residents.

Christian City offers a beautiful residential setting as well as a full range of services to meet the needs of a senior population. There are services in the home to help with housekeeping, shopping, companionship, and activities of daily living. In home health services are also available. In addition, there is an assisted living/personal care facility, secure services for those suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia. A 200 bed skilled nursing facility offers short term rehabilitation, physical, speech, and occupational therapy as well as long term nursing care and hospice—in other words, Christian City has everything you could ask for in a senior community and more. A great place to find friendship, easy living, great service, and excellent care all in one 500 acre bustling campus. As the leader of former President George W. Bush's Helping America's Youth initiative, Mrs. Bush has listened closely to the concerns of young people, parents and community leaders throughout the country. She draws attention to proven programs that help children avoid such risky behaviors as drug and alcohol use, early sexual activity and violence, and highlights the need for a caring adult role model in every child’s life.

In September 2001, Mrs. Bush joined the Library of Congress to launch the first National Book Festival. The Festival has grown each year, drawing more than 120,000 book-lovers from across the nation to Washington, D.C. in 2008. In 1995 Mrs. Bush established the Texas Book Festival, and it continues to thrive today. In 2006 Mrs. Bush hosted leaders from around the world for the White House Conference on Advancing Global Literacy, showcasing successful, culturally aware literacy programs from a diversity of countries. Her leadership of this effort led to her current role as Honorary Ambassador for the United Nations Literacy Decade.

Mrs. Bush is an advocate for women’s health and has been an active participant in campaigns to raise awareness of breast cancer and heart disease, both in the U.S. and around the world. She partnered with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in The Heart Truth campaign and the Red Dress project. And she traveled to Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Panama to help launch international partnerships for breast cancer awareness and research in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Laura Bush was born in Midland, Texas, to Harold and Jenna Welch. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Southern Methodist University and a master’s degree in library science from the University of Texas. She taught in public schools in Dallas, Houston and Austin and worked as a public school librarian. In 1977, she met and married George Walker Bush. This unique and elegant event will be held at the The Dolce Hotel and Resort in Peachtree City at 201 Aberdeen Parkway. Guests are invited to drop in on Thursday, Dec. 2 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. to kick off the holiday and pick up a great gift for that special someone at Santa’s Workshop and silent auction. To do their part, the children who live at The Children’s Village are painting miniature chairs which will be sold as Christmas ornaments.  Local artisans have painted original and beautiful children’s chairs and other pieces of art, which will all be sold to the highest bidder. Over 60 local businesses have donated fun, funky and unique items as well as themed baskets such as a Date Night basket, a Rejuvenation basket, Sports Tickets basket, a Pet Lover’s basket, Gourmet baskets and many others that will make holiday shopping easy. A trip for four to Tuscany, his and her watches, jewelry, sports memorabilia, Christmas décor and a romantic dinner for two are just some of the exciting items up for bid.

The Children’s Chair-ity fundraiser is being put on by hard working volunteers who have been meeting since May. This years team, lead by Angela Bean, is looking forward to provide this unique event at a new venue, The Dolce Atlanta,  who is also a sponsor. Over 90 small and large businesses including Nestle Purina, AT&T, Georgia Power,  MC Events and BB&T Reese Insurance to name a few, are sponsoring this effort and play a big role in it’s success.

It is amazing how many people have come together and how hard they have worked to make this a special event.  There is no way we could provide for our children during the holidays if it weren’t for the generosity of the community.  We are forever grateful,” Crutchfield remarked.

Located in Union City, Christian City cares for children who come to them both by private placement and from the Department of Family and Children Services. The children live in cottages with full time houseparents. With a focus on family, education and healing, Christian City is well known and respected throughout Georgia as providing a program of excellence.  Social workers, house parents and psychologists work together to minister to children who are dealing with life crisis, such as death of a parent, divorce, or sexual, physical, and emotional abuse issues.  Christian City’s program allows children from every background to have access to a traditional family environment and support systems to help mend their wounded spirits.  For many, Christian City will be the only home some children ever know.

The funds to provide this care are raised through individuals, civic groups, the faith community, local businesses and from fundraisers like the Children’s Chair-ity Event. Eagle Scout Neil Dhruv Organizes Project to Help Kids
Neil Dhruv, a sophomore at Woodward Academy, has been working towards being an Eagle Scout for years. He recently achieved the highest ranking honor in Boy Scouts when he completed his Eagle Scout project benefiting The Children's Village at Christian City. Each Eagle Scout was to create and design a project that benefits the community. Neil chose to handcraft wood picnic tables for less fortunate children to enjoy.

Three years ago, Neil went to India and saw a number of children living in an orphanage, and ever since has been thinking of how to help children in need. When the time came for Neil to choose his Eagle Scout project, it seemed like a perfect fit to help The Children's Village because it was nearby his Peachtree City home. Neil raised the funds and built four picnic tables with the help of his friends and fellow scouts. The kids and house parents will now be able to have a place they can sit to enjoy eating and visiting outdoors. Bob Crutchfield, President and CEO of Christian City expressed, "We are grateful for the hard work and dedication Neil put forth for his Eagle Scout project. What a great example he is to other young people! When you see kids helping kids it is very moving. Neil is an impressive young man and we are priviledged to know him and call him a friend."

Dr. Byron Harper dies. His legacy? Christian City.
Last Saturday, Dr. Byron Harper, Jr. passed away. There was a funeral on Wednesday and then he was buried in simple grave in a small cemetery. He ended his personal presence as humbly as he lived…quiet, unassuming, loving, positive, an encourager of all that is good and decent. His voice is now silent, but his legacy is not.

Dr. Byron Harper, along with his wife Rose Marie, was the driving force behind the creation of Christian City over 47 years ago. It was around his kitchen table that Christian City was prayed for, birthed and nurtured. It was on Dr. Harper’s land that Christian City became a reality. It was with Dr. Harper and Rose Marie’s direction, encouragement and support that Christian grew from one cottage for homeless children in 1963 to a sparkling new Children’s Village; from 50 acres of scrub pineland to a 500-acre campus housing over 1,000 children and seniors today.

Doc Harper loved people. He helped provide affordable housing for thousands of seniors many of whom had little or no income. He encouraged the building and operation of a 200-bed nursing and rehabilitation center, an assisted living and personal care facility, and an Alzheimer’s Disease center on Christian City’s campus. He provided free medical care for children without families of their own, the aged and infirm. He cared for hundreds of employees of Christian City, went from floor to floor to see and minister to residents, worked tirelessly in the clinic, and still maintained his private medical practice to thousands of patients from around the city.

Dr. Byron Harper is with us no more. He will be missed, but his legacy lives on in the thousands of families that have been touched by his servant heart. Dr. Harper was a great man.

Bob Crutchfield,
President/CEO,
Christian City
