Mission Statement:
"To minister to the needs of families with
particular emphasis on children, the aged, and the infirm, by
providing high quality, efficient, effective and affordable
residential, health and social services delivered in
accordance with the principles of the teachings of Jesus
Christ."
Christian City is a non-profit,
non-denominational organization providing for the needs of
children, the aged and the infirm. On our 400+ acre complex we
help meet the needs of approximately 1100 people in our Home
for Children, Convalescent Center,
Alzheimer's Care Center, Sparks Inn Retirement Center/Personal Care, and Retirement
Homes and Apartments.
Our residents include children from dysfunctional and financially
distressed families, adults in need of nursing care, personal
care, and assisted living / personal care, senior citizens on a limited income,
and other senior citizens who want a safe, secure place to
retire.
History:
- In 1961 a group of concerned citizens from area Christian
churches gathered to discuss certain needs not currently
being met in the community. They identified the need for
care for homeless children as well as care for the
elderly as two important needs not adequately being met.
This was the birth of the concept of "Christian
City".
- Christian City was chartered as a non-profit corporation
on March 28, 1962 and fund raising began.
- The first facility, the Home for
Children, was constructed on 50
acres of donated land located in Union City, GA near
Atlanta. The first children's cottage opened on February
14, 1965.
- In 1968, the first Retirement Home,
an independent living life-lease facility, was opened.
- In 1978, the Convalescent Center
opened caring for patients in need of intermediate and
skilled nursing care.
- In 1978, the first Retirement apartments were opened
serving physically handicapped individuals and senior
citizens on a limited income.
- In 1984, the Alzheimer's Care
Center was opened.
- In 1986, Sparks Inn Retirement
Center opened providing semi-independent and assisted
living quarters for senior citizens.
Today,
Christian City is licensed to care for 86 children, 200 convalescent
residents, 16 Alzheimer's residents, 300 Life-Lease retirement
residents, 300 retirement apartment residents and 200 residents
in Sparks Inn Retirement Center. This is all located on a 400+ acre complex located in Union City,
GA.
Christian
City is over-seen by a Board of Trustees. These men and women
come from throughout the state of Georgia.
Christian
City has 400 employees and over 150 volunteers working to meet
the needs of our 1100 residents.
Southwest Christian Hospice
is a ministry related to Christian City, and is located on the
same campus in Union
City, Georgia.
More about Christian City:
- Christian City is home to approximately 1100 men, women and children.
- Christian City is "owned" by a Board of
Trustees, two-thirds of which are members of the
Independent Christian Church. Others are from all
Protestant denominations.
- The operating expenses of the retirement
areas and the nursing home are funded by Medicaid,
Medicare, VA, private insurance, HUD, and fees the residents
pay. However, donations pay for the "extras"
(i.e. renovations).
- The Home for Children depends on the private donations to
meet expenses. Of Christian City's $17 million budget, it
takes $1.7 million to operate the Home for Children.
- We depend on donations from individuals, churches,
businesses and civic groups.
- Our donations come from: 10% from Businesses and Civic
Groups, 20% from Churches, 70% from Individuals
- The children come to us from private referral and a few
children through DFACS (Dept. of Family and Children
Services).
- Our children live in a home-like environment.
Houseparents are Mom and Dad. Just like your house or
mine, just larger...5 baths, 2 refrigerators, 2 stoves,
etc.
- Preschool children live in foster homes.
- Christian City is people helping people in need, elderly,
infirm and children. Christian City does collectively
what no single body could do on its own. Thousands of
donors, volunteers and staff providing for the needs of
thousands of people.
- The "Difference" is that we do it all
"...according to the principles of the teachings of
Jesus Christ".
- Though we are very large and approach many aspects of our
work in a businesslike fashion, we are a ministry. Our
"business" decisions are made with one thing in mind...how will our decision affect our
residents?
